Lisa ThomsonDr Lisa Thomson has a PhD in sociology. For the past 20 years she has worked as a social researcher in the community and government sector in a broad range of areas including, child and family services, youth homelessness, child disability, industrial relations and workplace health promotion. Lisa’s experience lies not only in data collection and analysis but in the implementation of an extensive range of knowledge translation activities. As Manager, Knowledge for Health her role is to facilitate VicHealth moving towards becoming a Knowledge organisation that specialises in the production, synthesis and translation of practical health promotion knowledge.

Jacqui AllenJacqui Allen, Deputy Director General, Department of Culture and the Arts, State Government of Western Australia will introduce the Public Value Measurement Framework, a new way of measuring, evaluating and describing the value of the arts sector in Western Australia, with a particular focus on understanding how public investments in the arts create value.  Arts Council England in its peer review of the framework has stated that it ‘is exciting because it is holistic – it offers a complete map of the process of public funding of culture from decision-making through to the assessment and articulation of value. In this sense the DCA is breaking new ground and we’re not aware of any other funding body internationally that has made such progress in developing a strategy for maximising the public value of culture.’

Rachel HealyRachel Healy, Rachel’s arts career includes ten years as General Manager of Belvoir Street Theatre and four years as Director of Performing Arts for Sydney Opera House. Rachel has also worked for Lowdown Magazine, The Australian Ballet, Handspan Theatre and Magpie Theatre and as an independent producer. She was a participant in the Prime Minister’s 2020 summit and has served on many boards including the Sydney Opera House Trust, Live Performance Australia, Kage Physical Theatre, funding boards for Arts NSW and as Deputy Chair of the Theatre Board of the Australia Council. She is currently Executive Manager of Culture for the City of Sydney.

The Search for the Holy Grail: Making use of indicator frameworks

A session with the developers and users of cultural data. Speakers from three government agencies will discuss their involvement in and experience of recent initiatives in developing frameworks for measuring cultural value, selecting indicators and collecting data.

Presenters:

– Dr Lisa Thomson, Manager Knowledge for Health, VicHealth, will discuss the soon to be launched Indicators Survey and accompanying suite of online resources. The new interface will allow easy analysis of cultural participation with other indicators of community wellbeing, and have ongoing application for those involved in planning, policy and program delivery.
– Rachel Healy, Executive Manager Culture, City of Sydney, will present on the proposed approach to the domain of ‘culturally rich and vibrant communities’ in the City of Sydney’s Indicator Framework  which tracks the wellbeing and sustainability of the community.

The session will be chaired by Judy Morton, Manager Research, Arts Victoria and member of the national Cultural Statistics Working Group of the Meeting of Cultural Ministers.
